The Google Sandbox
If you've ever visited a webmaster forum on the internet you may have heard reference to something called "The Google Sandbox". This is the much dreaded, and little known practice that Google apparently does to new websites. There's much talk about why brand new websites, especially those with new domain names have such a hard time getting a decent amount of traffic from Google. The theory behind this is that when a domain is registered for the first time, Google puts it into the "sandbox" where it has to hang out for a while before it's sent a decent amount of traffic from Google searches. No one really knows if it actually exists, but it does seem that there is some truth to it. There are many in the search engine optimization field that have studied this in detail and have concluded that it does indeed exist, but to what extent and for how long a site stays in the sandbox is anyones guess. Your best effort, like any good search engine optimization plan would be to try to obtain as many back-links as possible, provide unique content on your website and structure your site using keywords and proper titles and meta tags. The other trick that can possibly help is to purchase a domain name that has been registered for at least one and may have already been through the sandbox. Some also suggest that if you register a domain for more than one year when you're signing up, this can help because it shows Google that you are serious about making a viable website that will last. Of course, all of the above is a rumor and no one except the select few at Google know if this actually exists. As a webmaster with newer websites, I would suggest that something definitely happens to the traffic with a new website.
