My Weekend in Pittsburgh

By Blake Hygate

This weekend is my fifth wedding anniversary and my wife and I decided to take a weekend trip somewhere relatively close to home. Since we live near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, we are somewhat limited in the places that we can visit that we ha e not visited ever before. We had thought about a number of destinations that we had previously visited, but decided that we wanted to check out a new city.

Our search for a place within reasonable driving distance lead us to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's about 4.5 hours from our home. We set out this morning and decided not to take the regular interstate highway routes which our GPS always suggests. Our drive through the "back country" lead us through several beautiful small towns, which would never have visited had we taken the interstate highways.

Part of our trip included a few stops on some previously researched sites which I typed into our GPS. They included some covered bridges and a few small towns in Amish country. Since our area does not include covered bridges, it was quite a novelty to see one. Since I'm a history fan, covered bridges for me are quite fascinating. I was not aware the Pennsylvania has so many covered bridges so if you have not visited the state, I highly recommend it. Its very "hilly" if I can use that word. We're used to very flat countryside so hills are nice to see!

We also visited the towns of Volant and New Wilmington which are near some old order Amish areas. I am quite interested in the Amish. Although their way of life may seem odd to us, its nice to see that they are able to avoid the consumerist mindset of our day and live a much less complicated life.

So far our trip has been fun. I would highly recommend visiting the state of Pennsylvania and going into Pittsburgh if you have the chance.
